Rhode Island’s Cannabis Regulation Tour Seeks Public Input on Marijuana Oversight
Rhode Island’s recently established Cannabis Control Commission is reaching out to the public to gather insights on crucial aspects surrounding marijuana in the state. Comprising three dedicated members, the commission holds the responsibility of overseeing the licensing and regulation of both medical and recreational cannabis. Commission Chair, Kimberly Ahern, announced the tour during the panel’s inaugural meeting on June 29, highlighting the significance of community and industry voices in shaping the commission’s decisions.
The purpose of these public meetings is for the community and industry to use their voices and for the commissioners to listen,” said Chair Kimberly Ahern in a statement released on Thursday. Gathering feedback from stakeholders, especially those within the cannabis industry, medical patients, and those disproportionately affected by marijuana law enforcement, is vital to ensure accurate and well-informed decision-making.
In line with the successful initiative conducted in Massachusetts by their commission in 2017, Rhode Island’s Cannabis Control Commission has scheduled four insightful sessions. The first session will take place on Thursday, July 20, at Roger Williams University School of Law in the esteemed Hon. Bruce M. Selya Appellate Courtroom (Room 283) at 9:30 a.m. Attendees are requested to use the North Campus Entrance and park in Lot D.
Following that, the second session will be held on Friday, August 4, at 1 p.m. at the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), located at 89 Jefferson Blvd. in Warwick. This session provides an excellent opportunity for the public to share their perspectives on cannabis regulation and licensing in the state.
On Wednesday, August 9, at 5 p.m., the commission will host the third session at the Southside Cultural Center of Rhode Island, situated at 393 Broad St. in Providence. Attendees are encouraged to participate actively and provide valuable feedback that will aid the commission in making informed decisions for the benefit of the entire community.
Additionally, to accommodate broader participation, the commission has organized a virtual session on Friday, August 18, at 1 p.m. Cannabis Control Commissioners will be present at the PUC in Warwick for this virtual meeting. While the public is still welcome to attend in person, they are encouraged to join the session online via Zoom, using the provided links.
