Massachusetts on the Verge: Political Strategists Make a Stealth Move to Push for Psychedelics Legalization

In an intriguing turn of events, political strategists in Massachusetts have discreetly taken action to introduce a groundbreaking initiative on the state’s 2024 ballot, focusing on the legalization of therapeutic psychedelics. The newly formed committee, Massachusetts for Mental Health Options (MMHO), has recently submitted preliminary paperwork to the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance (OCPF), signaling their intent to secure ballot placement for this transformative measure. The keyphrase “psychedelics legalization initiative” lies at the heart of this captivating development.

According to the committee’s filed statement, Massachusetts for Mental Health Options aims to expand mental health treatment alternatives within the state by creating new avenues to access natural psychedelic medicine therapy. Their forthcoming ballot question seeks to provide widespread availability of natural psychedelic medicine therapy while eliminating criminal penalties associated with personal possession of these substances. The purpose is to revolutionize mental health treatment options, a critical need in the state.

However, this news has left some individuals feeling uneasy, raising questions about the extent of engagement between the MMHO committee and local advocacy groups that have successfully championed psychedelics decriminalization in various Massachusetts cities, most recently in Salem. The potential ties between the newly formed committee and the national New Approach PAC, which played a pivotal role in getting psychedelics initiatives on the ballot in Colorado and Oregon last year, have further fueled speculation.

Notably, David Bronner of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, a prominent supporter of New Approach and various efforts to reform marijuana and psychedelics laws nationwide, disclosed his backing for similar reform endeavors in Massachusetts and Arizona. Bronner’s involvement hints at the exploratory and preliminary nature of the coalition and policy development in Massachusetts, as confirmed through conversations with allies and state donors. To initiate any exploration, formal filing became necessary, leading to the submission of paperwork by the MMHO committee.

Two individuals, Danielle McCourt of DLM Strategies and Meredith Learner Moghimi of MLM Strategies, filed the paperwork on behalf of MMHO. While the funding source for this initiative remains unclear, as does the precise nature of their envisioned measure, time is of the essence as the deadline to submit the initiative petition looms just weeks away on August 3. This impending deadline may soon shed light on the funding and details surrounding this initiative.

When reached for comment about the campaign, Meredith Learner Moghimi directed the State House News Service to contact Ben Unger, associated with New Approach, further hinting at a connection between the PAC and the Massachusetts initiative. Both Moghimi and Unger emphasized that the committee is still in the exploratory phase, with a coalition forming and policy undergoing rigorous vetting, discussions, and finalization. Ironing out the plethora of details associated with this groundbreaking endeavor presents a significant challenge.

Massachusetts, a state that legalized adult-use marijuana through a ballot initiative in 2016, has emerged as a prominent hub for psychedelics policy reform. Grassroots activists, including those affiliated with the non-profit Bay Staters for Natural Medicine, have spearheaded the decriminalization movement, resulting in several cities within the state, such as Salem, Somerville, Cambridge, Easthampton, Northampton, and Amherst, enacting local reforms.

In parallel, the state legislature has witnessed a Republican lawmaker filing three psychedelics reform bills, proposing the legalization of substances like psilocybin, pending federal approval, and implementing a price cap on therapeutic access. Additionally, several other legislators have introduced psychedelics-related bills during this session, including measures to legalize certain entheogenic substances for adults. One bill specifically authorizes the Department of Public Health to conduct a comprehensive study on the potential therapeutic effects of synthetic psychedelics such as MDMA. Furthermore, Representative Mike Connolly (D) introduced a bill in 2021, which received a Joint Judiciary Committee hearing, focusing on studying the implications of legalizing entheogenic substances like psilocybin and ayahuasca.

The path to psychedelic reform in Massachusetts holds immense potential for reshaping mental health treatment options and addressing the pressing needs of individuals grappling with various mental health conditions. As the MMHO committee diligently progresses toward securing ballot placement, the state’s residents and stakeholders eagerly await the finalization of this visionary initiative. The journey toward a new era of mental health treatment approaches is on the horizon, and Massachusetts stands at the forefront of this transformative movement.
