Marijuana Data: Unveiling the Latest Trends in Cannabis Use

Hey there, fellow cannabis enthusiasts! Today, we’re going to dive deep into the world of marijuana data and explore the latest trends in cannabis use. Whether you’re a seasoned cannabis connoisseur or just curious about the ever-evolving landscape of cannabis policy, you’re in the right place.

The Federal Health Agency’s Insightful Survey

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently dropped some knowledge bombs with its 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). This annual survey is like a treasure trove of information for anyone interested in understanding how marijuana is consumed and perceived in our society.

So, what’s the buzz about this year’s survey? Well, SAMHSA decided to up its game and adapt to the changing cannabis policy landscape. They revamped the marijuana section of the questionnaire to reflect the growing diversity of cannabis products and consumption methods. Talk about staying up-to-date!

    Distinguishing Between Marijuana and Hemp

One of the major changes in the survey is its ability to distinguish between marijuana and hemp products. This is crucial as more states decriminalize or legalize marijuana, allowing for more accurate reporting of cannabis purchases. It’s all about keeping up with the times.

How Do You Consume Your Cannabis?

Now, let’s get to the fun part – how people consume their cannabis. The survey asked respondents about their preferred methods, and the results were eye-opening. From smoking to vaping, dabbing to edibles, the options are more diverse than ever. It’s not just about rolling a joint anymore, folks!

In 2022, the most common method of consumption among people 12 and older was good old-fashioned smoking (78 percent). But here’s where it gets interesting – eating or drinking infused products came in at a close second (47 percent). Vaping, dabbing, and other methods followed suit.

    The Ever-Popular Marijuana

Marijuana remains the most commonly used federally illicit drug. In 2022, past-year use stood at 22 percent among those 12 and older, with past-month use at 15 percent. These numbers are on the rise compared to the previous year, likely due to the easing of social restrictions during the pandemic.

    What About the Teens?

Now, let’s talk about the youth. The survey revealed that 6.4 percent of teens aged 12-17 reported using marijuana in the past month in 2022. While this is a slight increase from the previous year, it’s important to note that it’s still lower than the 2019 rate of 7.4 percent.

    Stable Youth Consumption

Interestingly, youth consumption has remained relatively stable, even as more states have embraced adult-use legalization. This aligns with research showing that rates of cannabis use among high school students have been dropping.

    Different Opinions on the Data

Of course, there are different perspectives on the data. Kevin Sabet of Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) believes that marijuana use is skyrocketing among all age groups. He argues that the normalization and industrialization of high-potency THC products are concerning.

    Enter CBD

But it’s not just about THC. The revised survey also delved into the use of federally legal hemp-derived CBD products. Approximately 11 percent of people 12 and older reported past-month use of CBD. It’s the first time the NSDUH asked about CBD, so we don’t have a benchmark for comparison.

    Perfect Timing

Now, here’s a little fun fact – the survey was shared by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra at precisely 4:20 pm ET. It’s a nod to cannabis culture and the symbolism of the number 420 within the community. Secretary Becerra certainly knows how to make an entrance!

A Snapshot of Behavioral Health Nationwide

Secretary Becerra pointed out that the National Survey on Drug Use and Health provides an annual snapshot of behavioral health nationwide. This data is invaluable for shaping policies and services to help those in need.

    Cannabis Data Across the Government

What’s exciting is that federal agencies are increasingly incorporating more marijuana-related data into their work. For example, the U.S. Census Bureau recently released its first report on state-level cannabis tax revenue data. It’s all part of the government’s effort to adapt to the changing cannabis landscape.

    Youth Use Trends

Returning to the topic of youth use, the SAMHSA survey suggests a slight uptick in 2022, but overall trends have remained stable amid state-level legalization. This aligns with research showing that rates of cannabis use among high school students have been dropping.

    Legalization’s Impact on Youth

Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Medical Association (AMA) supports the idea that state-level legalization has not led to increased youth use. It’s all about responsible regulation and enforcement.

    Dispensaries Doing Their Part

Dispensaries are also playing a crucial role in preventing underage sales. Compliance rates are impressively high, with the majority of stores strictly enforcing age restrictions. It’s a testament to the effectiveness of regulated markets.

    A Glimpse into the Future

As we wrap up our journey through the world of marijuana data, it’s clear that the landscape of cannabis consumption is evolving. With more options and a better understanding of the impact of legalization, we can look forward to a future where responsible cannabis use is the norm.

In conclusion, a big shoutout to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for providing us with this insightful data. It’s essential to stay informed and keep the conversation going about cannabis in our society. Thanks for joining me on this cannabis data adventure!

And, of course, a special thanks to Kyle Jaeger for reporting on this fascinating survey. Keep up the great work, Kyle!

Now, go forth and share your newfound cannabis knowledge with the world. Until next time, stay chill and stay informed. Peace out!
