Psychedelics Surge Ahead: SXSW 2024 Panel Picks Reflect Shifting Landscape

Psychedelics Surge Ahead: SXSW 2024 Panel Picks Reflect Shifting Landscape

Voting has officially commenced for the 2024 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, and this year’s buzz centers around a remarkable development—the prominence of more than 100 marijuana and psychedelics panels up for consideration.

With drug policy reform issues consistently gracing the Austin-based event’s stage, the focus has intensified in recent years. The rise of cannabis legalization and the flourishing interest in psychedelics reform, at local, state, and federal levels, has sparked vibrant discussions.

Notably, the SXSW festival has witnessed a surge in psychedelics-related panels, mirroring the rapid momentum of the reform movement and cutting-edge research surrounding substances like psilocybin, MDMA, and ayahuasca. This year’s standout feature includes a dedicated panel track for psychedelics, diverging from marijuana—a surprising move given the comparable number of events contending for votes in both categories.

A groundbreaking shift has occurred—the number of proposed psychedelics panels, totaling 56 this year, has outpaced those centered on cannabis, which garnered 49 proposals for the upcoming festival.

Kicking off on Tuesday, the SXSW PanelPicker voting phase—an influential process in determining the festival’s panel lineup for March 2024—will conclude on August 20.

    Marijuana Panels:

“From Prison to Prosperity: Impacting Cannabis Laws Through Advocacy”
Delving into the power of storytelling, activist partnerships, and direct policy change, this panel, hosted by The Last Prisoner Project, delves into the advocacy efforts driving marijuana law reform and addressing the adverse consequences of prohibition. Attendees will learn about effective strategies, from direct lobbying to grassroots movements, translating advocacy into tangible policy shifts.

“Cannabis & The Campaign Trail: Navigating Politics & Reform”
This panel scrutinizes the evolving political landscape surrounding cannabis, uncovering politicians’ motivations for supporting or opposing reform. In-depth discussions will dissect the intricate dynamics that shape the industry’s influence on legislation. Renowned speakers including Politico’s Natalie Fertig, Mason Tvert from VS Strategies, Justin Strekal from Useful Strategies, and Darren Weiss from Verano Holdings Corp. will headline the event.

“Designing the Evolution of Cannabis Consumption”
Rolling Stone culture editor Elisabeth Garber-Paul, joined by innovative cannabis entrepreneurs, explores the shifting consumer trends amid the evolving legalization movement. With states embracing novel license types like social consumption lounges, the intersection of design, consumer preferences, and experiences takes center stage. The impact of women in the marijuana realm also garners attention.

“Embracing the Cannabis Boom in the South: From Stigma to Success”
Tailored to the Texas backdrop, this panel spotlights the flourishing cannabis industry in the southern United States. Industry leaders will convene to explore the unique challenges and opportunities inherent in cannabis operations. Participating luminaries include Leafly’s senior editor David Downs, Virginia Minority Cannabis Coalition Founder Paul McLean, and accomplished cannabis executives.

“Business-Led Solutions: Redressing the War on Drugs Impact”
Weldon Angelos, founder of the Weldon Project and a recipient of a presidential pardon for his federal cannabis conviction, joins Makr House CEO Amber Senter in discussing businesses‘ pivotal role in enacting positive change within the cannabis space. Their discourse extends to uplifting communities disproportionately affected by prohibition.

    Psychedelics Panels:

    “Psychedelic Leadership and Evolutionary Change”
Can psychedelic experiences nurture qualities like creativity and open-mindedness, or might they amplify narcissism? These are the intriguing queries tackled by this panel. Visionaries such as Isadora Tang, Google’s vice president of Transformation Labs, and Amy Emerson, CEO of MAPS Public Benefit Corporation, will contribute their insights.

“Charting Psychedelics for Mental Health: A Path Forward”
Professors from the University of Texas at Austin delve into the multitude of unanswered questions and controversies surrounding psychedelic-assisted therapy. Dosages, administration routes, and the role of subjective experiences in therapeutic contexts take center stage.

“Preventing Despair: Psychedelics’ Role in Mental Health”
Reason for Hope executives share personal experiences of losing loved ones to despair-related conditions. They highlight the therapeutic potential of specific psychedelics in treating severe mental health issues and discuss their advocacy work to secure funding for essential clinical research.

“Shaping Tomorrow’s Psychedelics: Policy Reform & Development”
MAPS Founder Rick Doblin presents a compelling exploration of the future of psychedelics. The panel scrutinizes policy frameworks for regulated access and delves into the findings of studies investigating psychedelics’ impact on conditions like PTSD.

“Unveiling MDMA’s Journey: Exploring FDA’s Breakthrough”
This panel, featuring MAPS representatives and Palo Santo Fund co-founder Daniel Goldberg, unveils the captivating history and future of MDMA. Recognized as an FDA-designated “breakthrough therapy,” MDMA’s pivotal role in the psychedelics reform movement and the research driving its growing appeal come under the spotlight.

The array of more than 100 drug policy panels up for consideration at SXSW 2024 underscores the dynamic and transformative landscape. Following the submission of votes and meticulous review by event organizers and an advisory board, the chosen panels are set to be unveiled by year’s end.
